Tenerife
Tenerife is the largest of 7 major volcanic islands forming the archipelago of the
Canary Islands. The other islands are, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La
Palma, Gomera, Hierro.
Due to it's position in the Atlantic sea the Island enjoys an almost constant temperature
all year round.
With an area of 2,059 sq km ( 795 square miles ), the island length is about 97
km (60 mi) with widths from 48 km (30 mi) down to 16 km (10 mi) in places. The islands
are situated 71 miles from Africa and over a 1000 miles from the Iberian Peninsula.
Pico de Tiede is the highest volcanic mountain in the Canaries, (it last erupted
in 1909) 3,718 m/12,198 ft high. In fact Tiede is the highest peak in any Spanish
