Knowledge on Malta and the Order of St John
The Knights of the Order of Saint John had been moving from place to place in Europe
after being ousted from Rhodes in 1522. By order of Pope Clement VIII and King Charles
V of Spain and with consent of the King of Sicily the Knights moved to Malta in
1530. The annual fee of one Maltese Falcon was paid to the Viceroy of Sicily acting
as the King's representative.
The Knights of Malta was the new name they adapted after moving to the island.
