The Czech Republic is a land locked country in central europe. Bordered to the north
by Poland, Germany to the northwest and west, Austria to the south, and Slovakia
to the east.
The Czech Republic was born out of the split of the
former Czechoslovak Federal Republic in two on 1st January 1993, the other part becoming Slovakia. The country
is composed of two older regions, Bohemia and Moravia along with a part of Silesia.
Since May 2004 the Czech Republic has been a member of the European Union.
Prague is the largest city, but other major cities include Brno, České Budějovice,
Hradec, Králové, Liberec, Olomouc, Pardubice, Plzeň, Ostrava, Ústí nad Labem, Zlín.
The Czech Republic consists of a varying landscape, Bohemia to the west is within
a basin drained by the Elbe and Vltava rivers. Around this basin is low mountains
of which one is called Sněžka at 1602 metres above sea level. Movaria is hilly with
the Morava river taking most of the water away from the region. Morava also contains
the source of the Oder river.
The Czech Republic has 12 UNESCO sites of cultural heritage.
Weather wise the summers are warm whilst the winters are cold and humids with plenty
of cloud.
