Belfry Tower
The
83 metre belfry tower looks down onto the market square, originally built
in 1240 but was destroyed by fire in 1280. Beneath the tower is the cloth hall
in
which Flemish cloth from other cities would have been sold to the rest of the world. You can pay to climb the 366 steps if you wish.
In the centre of the
Market stands the statue of Jan Breydel and
Pieter de Coninck
